Creating a Fitness Routine that Sticks

We’re well into the New Year, and those #newyearnewme fitness goals might be getting pushed onto the backburner thanks to our crazy busy lives. It’s hard to stick to a fitness routine when you’ve got so much going on! Now what? It’s time to make those New Year’s Resolutions work(out) for you!

Find your “why” and plan around it

Your motivations for starting (or restarting) your fitness journey are unique to you, and key to your success. Take a look inward and decide why this commitment is important to you. If you haven’t already, check out this post on core values and how finding yours will help you tremendously in achieving your goals across all areas of your life.

Beyond this, think about other commitments that have been successful for you, and tap into If you’re all about a challenge, be sure that you’re always raising the bar with more difficult workouts or new classes. A ClassPass membership might be perfect to give you the variety you need!

But if you’re like me and are driven by consistency, try to build a schedule that you can follow every day. That way your “off days” don’t become your “every day”!

Lean into the seasons

Don’t let the winter blues get you down. Try skiing, skating, or snowy hikes to make the most of the colder months. If the weather isn’t cooperating and you’re feeling achy from the cold, I’m always a fan of putting on your comfies and doing some at-home yoga.

Find accountability that works for you

When you’re starting out with a new goal, there are many approaches to accountability to consider:

  • Internal motivation – deciding you’re going to succeed, keeping track in a journal, etc.
  • Online accountability – finding a supportive online community and sharing your progress
  • Accountability partners – working alongside a friend that’s striving for the same goal and experiencing the same struggles
  • Coaches – receiving consistent support and guidance drawn from experience with the same challenges

Be sure that the methods you choose are reliable for the long haul. Combine multiple types of accountability for the best chance for success!

Lower your barriers to entry

When you’re first starting out, it can be intimidating to envision your ideal fitness routine. It might feel like you need a fancy gym membership, better equipment or clothing, a perfect nutrition plan, or, ironically, more confidence and fitness to even get started. Please know that none of these things are required to create a fitness routine that works for you!

Start with what you have, and if you feel inspired to do so, you can work your way up from there. I’m a firm believer in at-home workouts, which allow me to sleep more, not worry about what I’m wearing or what I look like first thing in the morning. It’s hard to make excuses when you just need to get to your living room to start your workout!
